Environmental Education: Trans-disciplinary Approaches to Addressing Wicked Problems

Certificate
Cornell University will grant two types of certificates (Achievement and Expert) depending on work completed.


Objectives
Achievement Certificate participants will:

Define wicked problems and understand the need for transdisciplinary work to address wicked environmental problems;
Become familiar with environmental education and related approaches;
Become familiar with disciplines and sectors that can work with environmental education to address wicked problems;
Contribute to an online discussion of course content as applied to different contexts throughout the world.

Expert Certificate participants will do all of the above plus:

Analyze cases studies that integrate multiple disciplines and sectors to address wicked problems;
Develop, as individuals or teams, your own case study that integrates multiple disciplines and sectors to address a wicked problem.

The course will be offered in winter 2018.

Course overview

The goal of this course is to create an environmental education “trading zone”—an online space where scholars and students gather to learn about multiple disciplines that shed light on how to improve environmental quality and change environmental behaviors. Each of the lectures, readings, discussions, and case studies will focus on the implications of a particular discipline for environmental education, as well as what environmental education has to contribute to related disciplines and sectors. Learn about how environmental education, environmental governance, environmental psychology, environmental sociology and other disciplines can work together to address ‘wicked problems,’ not readily addressed by working in disciplinary silos.
